About Moms Mabley
Moms Mabley, born on March 19, 1894 in Brevard, North Carolina, was a legendary American standup comedian and pioneer of the ‘Chitlin’ Circuit’ of African-American vaudeville.
She chose a career in performance over marriage as a teen. After achieving success on the African-American comedy circuit, she gained wider recognition among white audiences with her performance at Carnegie Hall in 1962 and numerous appearances on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.
In 2013, Whoopi Goldberg produced and narrated a documentary about Mabley’s life for HBO. Notably, at age 75, Mabley became the oldest person to have a US Top 40 hit when her cover version of “Abraham, Martin and John” reached #35 on the Hot 100 chart in 1969.
Moms Mabley had six children and came out as a lesbian at a time when such openness was uncommon among performers.
