About Whoopi Goldberg
Whoopi Goldberg is an American comedic actress born on November 13, 1955 in New York City, New York. She gained recognition for her leading role in the 1985 film The Color Purple and won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for playing an eccentric psychic in the 1990 movie Ghost. Additionally, she voiced the hyena Shenzi in the 1994 Disney film The Lion King and played the character Carmen Tibideaux on the popular musical series Glee.
Prior to her fame, from 1979 to 1981, she worked in several theater productions in Communist East Germany, where she also smuggled contraband for her artist friends.
Goldberg won a Tony Award for producing the Broadway musical Thoroughly Modern Millie in 2002 and has earned distinction as one of very few entertainers to achieve EGOT status – winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award.
Her name comes from the whoopee cushion gag toy. She was married three times- first to Alvin Martin with whom she had one daughter before divorcing; then to David Claessen (from ’86-’88); and finally Lyle Trachtenberg (from ’94-’95).
