About Maria White Lowell
Maria White Lowell (July 8, 1821 – March 27, 1853) was an American poet and abolitionist known for her advocacy of temperance. Born in Massachusetts into an intellectual family, she went on to marry fellow poet James Russell Lowell in 1844. The couple faced the tragic loss of three out of four children during their marriage.
Lowell’s poetry gained recognition when Henry Wadsworth Longfellow published her poem “The Grave of Keats.” She also found admirers in other poets, including the reclusive Emily Dickinson. In fact, it is believed that Dickinson may have drawn inspiration from Lowell’s work.
Despite her relatively short life, Maria White Lowell left a lasting impact as a talented poet and an influential figure in social causes such as abolitionism and teetotalism.
