About Emily Dickinson

Emily Dickinson (December 10, 1830 – May 15, 1886) was a renowned American poet from Amherst, Massachusetts. Her reclusive lifestyle and posthumously-published poems have made her a major figure in American literature. Some of her notable works include “A great Hope fell,” “A Clock stopped,” and “Alone, I cannot be.”

Dickinson attended Amherst Academy with her sister shortly after the school opened its doors to female students. She wrote nearly eighteen hundred poems during her lifetime, many of which explore the theme of mortality. Despite being born into a prominent family (her paternal grandfather was one of the founders of Amherst College), she lived most of her adult life in seclusion and never married.

She had a brother named William Austin Dickinson who was a lawyer and married Emily’s sister-in-law, Susan Huntington Gilbert Dickinson.
