Irene Tu (born April 10, 1992) is an American comedian, actor, and writer known for her performances at comedy festivals such as the Portland Queer Comedy Festival, Bridgetown Comedy Festival, and Comedy Central’s Clusterfest. She has also made appearances on television shows including The Movie Show, Take My Wife, and The Guest List alongside comedians like Maria Bamford, Ron Funches, Cameron Esposito, and Michelle Buteau.
Before pursuing a career in comedy, Tu sang in her elementary school chorus and played piano for 10 years. She was involved in athletics, quiz bowl, and science club. Inspired by Ellen DeGeneres‘ success as a stand-up comedian , she began training at Second City at the age of 16. Tu earned a degree in Asian-American studies from the University of California Berkeley after transferring from Northwestern University.
