Elizabeth Ann Seton was a religious leader born in New York City, New York on August 28, 1774. She is known as the founder of the first Catholic school in America, the Saint Joseph’s Academy and Free School, located in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Before achieving fame for her contributions to education, Seton experienced significant loss early in her life with the death of her mother and later her step-mother when her father divorced. She is celebrated as the patron saint of Catholic schools and holds the distinction of being the first native-born American citizen to be canonized as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. Seton’s parents were Catherine Charlton and Richard Bayley.
