About Betty DeGeneres
Betty DeGeneres, born on May 20, 1930 in Louisiana, is best known as the mother of actress and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. She is also recognized for her activism with PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) and the Coming Out Project.
Originally from New Orleans, Louisiana, Betty briefly attended Louisiana State University before starting her family. Following her daughter’s public coming out, she authored two memoirs: “Just a Mom” and “Love, Ellen: A Mother Daughter Journey.”
Betty was married to Elliott DeGeneres with whom she had actor son Vance DeGeneres in 1954 and Ellen in 1958. After marrying Roy Gruessendorf as her second husband, Betty retained the surname DeGeneres.
