About AnnMaria De Mars
AnnMaria De Mars is a martial artist born on August 15, 1958, in Alton, Illinois. Best known as the first American to win gold at the World Judo Championships in 1984, she has also been recognized by Forbes as one of the “40 Women to Watch Over 40” in 2013.
Prior to her fame, De Mars began her judo career at the age of twelve at her local YMCA and continued to compete throughout high school and college. She also pursued judo during an exchange study program in Japan.
In addition to her achievements in martial arts, De Mars is an activist and CEO. She founded 7 Generation Games and has authored numerous grants for Native American programs with a focus on improving educational systems for Indigenous youth.
She is also known for being the mother of MMA fighter Ronda Rousey and sports journalist Maria Burns Ortiz.
