About Susan Howe
Susan Howe (born June 10, 1937) is an American poet associated with the Language poets and known for her postmodernist works such as “Frolic Architecture” and “The Midnight.” She has also published two works of literary criticism: “My Emily Dickinson” and “The Birth-Mark: Unsettling the Wilderness in American Literary History.”
Before gaining recognition as a poet, Howe attended the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts and later debuted her poetry collection, “Hinge Picture,” in 1974.
In 2011, she was honored with the Bollingen Prize in American Poetry.
Throughout her life, Susan was married to two artists: Harvey Quaytman and David von Schlegell. After her second husband’s passing, she wed University at Buffalo professor Peter Hewitt Hare.
