About Zora Neale Hurston

Zora Neale Hurston was a novelist and folklorist, born on January 7, 1891, in Notasulga, Alabama. She is renowned for her significant contributions to the Harlem Renaissance and her masterpiece novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, which was published in 1937.

Hurston was also recognized for her work as a folklorist and received a Guggenheim Fellowship to conduct anthropological research in Haiti and Jamaica. Additionally, she worked at the Pan American World Airways Technical Library in 1957.

Before gaining fame, Hurston attended Howard University during the early 1920s before receiving an anthropology degree from Barnard College. During this time period, she published Mules and Men—a work heavily focused on folklore.

Hurston relocated to Harlem in the 1920s where she became close friends with Langston Hughes; however they later had a falling out over their co-written work, Mule Bone.

She grew up as one of eight siblings born to a Baptist minister. Throughout her life she had two brief marriages: first to jazz musician Herbert Sheen (1927-1931), and then to Albert Price (1939).
