Yesli Vega is an American politician who gained prominence as the 2022 Republican nominee for Virginia’s 7th Congressional District Seat, where she contested against incumbent Democrat Abigail Spanburger. Prior to her political career, Vega previously served as a law enforcement officer in Virginia.
Born on July 5, 1985, in the United States to Salvadoran immigrant parents, Vega graduated from the American Military University before entering politics. In 2018, she was elected to Prince William County’s Board of Supervisors and also worked as a supervisor and auxiliary sheriff in the Prince William County Sheriff’s Office.
However, her campaign faced controversy after audio recordings surfaced in which she expressed skepticism about rape victims’ likelihood of becoming pregnant. Additionally, with two children of her own, her personal life has been tangentially influential on both sides.
