About Xernona Clayton
Xernona Clayton is an African-American civil rights leader known for her work with Martin Luther King Jr. as a member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in the 1960s. Born on August 30, 1930, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, she made history as the first Southern African-American to host a prime-time talk show when she began hosting The Xernona Clayton Show in 1967.
Prior to her groundbreaking television career, Clayton was a Music major at Tennessee State Agricultural and Industrial College. She married fellow civil rights activist Ed Clayton in 1957 until his passing in 1966, after which she later married judge Paul L. Brady.
In honor of her contributions to society and culture, Mattel created The Xernona Clayton Barbie doll in 2004 as part of their “Inspiring Women” series.
