Winnie Madikizela Mandela, born on September 26, 1936 in Bizana, South Africa, was a prominent politician and political activist. She became notable for her role as First Lady of South Africa while married to Nelson Mandela. Additionally, she served as head of the African National Congress’ Women’s League and National Executive Committee.
Prior to her rise in politics, Madikizela Mandela earned a degree in social work from the Jan Hofmeyer School in Johannesburg and a degree in international relations from the University of Witwatersrand – an education that defied the restrictions imposed by apartheid at that time.
Her political activism led to years spent living in exile in Brandfort, South Africa (part of the Orange Free State). In 1958, she married Nelson Mandela with whom she had two children before their divorce in 1996.
