About Winifred Lawson
Winifred Lawson (born November 15, 1892) was an English operatic soprano best known for her performances of the works of Gilbert & Sullivan. She began her career as a classical concert vocalist and made her operatic debut in 1920 in a London production of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. Lawson performed with London’s D’Oyly Carte Opera Company and the English National Opera (then called the Sadler’s Wells Opera), portraying iconic roles such as Yum-Yum in The Mikado and Josephine in H.M.S. Pinafore.
During World War II, she entertained troops throughout the Middle East as a member of the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA). She grew up in Wolverhampton, England, and later settled in London. Her memoir, A Song to Sing-O!, was published towards the end of her life.
