About Wilma Rudolph
Wilma Rudolph was an American athlete born on June 23, 1940 in Saint Bethlehem, Tennessee. She became known for her achievements in running and won three gold medals at the 1960 Rome Olympics, triumphing in the 100m, 200m, and as part of the 4 x 100m relay team. This made her the first American woman to clinch three gold medals in track and field at a single Games.
Prior to her fame as an Olympic champion, Rudolph had worn leg braces until she was nine years old due to complications from infantile paralysis. Despite this early challenge, she excelled in sports and played basketball during high school before making her debut Olympic appearance in 1956.
Rudolph’s accolades extended beyond the Olympics; she was named AP’s Woman Athlete of the Year for both 1960 and 1961. Additionally, she is honored as a member of the US Olympic Hall of Fame. Following her athletic career, Rudolph worked as a teacher.
She shared four children with Robert Eldridge.
