Wilma Mankiller was a Native American world leader, born on November 18, 1945 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. She made history as the first female chief of the Cherokee Nation in 1987. During her tenure, she orchestrated a significant growth in the Cherokee population and authored the bestselling autobiography “Mankiller: A Chief and Her People.” Before embarking on her groundbreaking career, Mankiller started in an entry level position within the Cherokee Nation.
She married Hector Hugo Olaya de Bardi at age seventeen and had two daughters with him before later marrying Charlie Soap. However, at the end of her final term in office, members of the Cherokee Nation filed a lawsuit against her alleging embezzlement of national funds.
