About Willie Francis
Willie Francis (January 12, 1929 – May 9, 1947) was an African American teenager who gained notoriety for surviving a failed execution by electrocution in the United States. Born in St. Martinville, Louisiana, he was wrongfully convicted of the murder of Andrew Thomas, a Cajun pharmacy owner who had once employed him. Despite efforts to appeal his case to the U.S. Supreme Court, Francis was executed at the age of 18.
Francis was arrested at age 15 and found guilty at 16 before being sentenced to death. He also wrote a pamphlet titled “My Trip to the Chair” after escaping death upon his initial electrocution attempt.
Born to Frederick Francis and Louise Taylor as the youngest of six boys and seven girls, he later gained attention for having a slight stutter.
