Wangari Muta Maathai was a Kenyan environmentalist, politician, and women’s rights activist. Born on April 1, 1940 in Nyeri, Kenya, she made history as the first African woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Maathai served as an assistant minister for Environment and Natural Resources from 2003 to 2005.Before her political career, she pursued a degree in biology at Mount St. Scholastica College in Kansas with the help of a scholarship.
