About Vita Sackville-West
Vita Sackville-West was an English author, poet, and journalist known for her published works and her relationship with Virginia Woolf. Born on March 9, 1892 in Kent, England, she attended Helen Wolff’s school for girls where she wrote eight novels occasionally in French.
Her most popular works include The Edwardians and All Passion Spent. She is often recognized as the inspiration behind Woolf’s book Orlando: A Biography. Sackville-West and her husband are famous for creating the renowned garden at Sissinghurst Castle.
Due to being a woman, she was unable to inherit Knole, the country house where she was born originally gifted to the Sackville-West family by Elizabeth I of England. Vita married Harold Nicolson with whom she had two sons; their marriage was known as primarily platonic due to Vita’s relationships with women throughout their marriage.
Vita passed away on June 2nd 1962 leaving behind a significant literary legacy and impact on British literature.
