Virginia Woolf (1882-01-25) was a British novelist, essayist, and feminist known for her famous modernist works such as Mrs. Dalloway and To the Lighthouse.
Throughout her life she struggled with depression and tragically drowned herself at the age of 59.
Woolf began writing professionally in 1900 and published her debut novel, The Voyage Out, fifteen years later. She was also a prominent member of the Bloomsbury Group but held animosity toward fellow modernist writer James Joyce.
Born Adeline Virginia Stephen in London, England, she married Leonard Woolf in 1912 and had an affair with Vita Sackville-West.
