Virginia Dwan, born on October 18, 1931, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, was an American conceptual artist known for her role as an art collector, patron, and philanthropist. She is also recognized as the founder of the Dwan Light Sanctuary in Montezuma, New Mexico.
Dwan gained prominence as the former owner and executive director of Dwan Gallery in Los Angeles (1959-1967) and Dwan Gallery New York (1965-1971), widely associated with Minimalism, Conceptual Art, and Earthworks movements in American contemporary art.
Before gaining recognition for her contributions to the art world,
Dwan briefly studied art at UCLA before leaving to get married. In 1965, the Virginia Dwan Collection featuring artists such as Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline,Claes Oldenburg ,and Lee Bontecou was exhibited at the University of California Los Angeles

Born to Charles and Laura (Israelson) Dwan in Minneapolis,Hennessey county,Saint Louis Park(region )Minnesota,she hailed from a family fortune owing to her grandfather John Dun’s association with Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company or commonly known today as 3M company.She had a child named Candace from her first marriage with Paul Henry Fischer.and .later she remarried Vadim Kondratieff who prompted her pursue opening a gallery.
