About Violeta Zuniga
Violeta Zuniga (born April 12, 1933) is a Chilean human rights activist known for her work during the Military Dictatorship of Chile from 1973-1990. She co-founded the Group of Family Members of Detainees and Disappeared and was a member of the folk dance group, Cueca sola, using her performances to commemorate those who disappeared.
Zuniga was born in Zuniga, O’Higgins Region and later moved to Santiago where she met her life partner, Pedro Silva Bustos. After his disappearance in 1976, she joined human rights organizations and worked with groups Agrupacion and “Women for Life”, organizing protests and peaceful marches. Due to threats of violence, she left the country briefly before returning.
Throughout her activism, Zuniga has been vocal about searching for truth regarding disappearances during that tumultuous period in Chile’s history. Her dedication to these efforts extended beyond personal loss as she sought justice for many others who had experienced similar tragedies.
Aside from her activism work which made significant impacts on society at large keeping alive important historical memories within Chile’s recent past,Zuniga remains committed to preserving individuals’ legacies through public commemoration including naming her dog ‘Garzon’, inspired by Spanish lawyer Baltasar Garzon involved in bringing Augusto Pinochet to trial.
