About Violet Pauline King Henry
Violet Pauline King Henry (October 18, 1929 – May 31, 1982) was a Canadian lawyer and notable figure in legal history.
She made history as Canada’s first black female lawyer and the first black person to graduate from law school in Alberta and pass the Alberta Bar exam. Violet began her legal career practicing criminal law in Calgary, Canada. In the latter part of her career, she worked in the United States, where she became the first woman to hold a senior management position at the national YMCA.
Born in Calgary to parents who had relocated from the United States during the Great Migration, Violet attended Crescent Heights High School before pursuing higher education at the University of Alberta. Despite being one of only three women among 142 students studying law that year, she persevered and earned her degree.
To support herself through college, Violet taught piano lessons and remained actively involved in student government organizations throughout her education. In recognition of her contributions and achievements, the Federal Building Plaza in Alberta was officially named “Violet King Henry Plaza” in 2021.
In addition to her groundbreaking legal career, Violet was also a wife to Godfrey C. Henry whom she married in 1965; together they had a daughter named Jo-Anne.
