About Viola Amherd
Viola Amherd (born June 7, 1962) is a Swiss politician who has been a member of the Swiss Federal Council since 2019. She currently serves as the head of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport. In December 2022, she was elected Vice-President of the Federal Council for 2023.
Prior to her political career, Amherd graduated from the latin grammar school at the college in Brig in 1982 and went on to study jurisprudence at the University of Fribourg from 1982 to 1987.
Since 1991, she has worked as a self-employed lawyer and notary with an office in Brig-Glis. She was a member of the Christian Democratic People’s Party until it merged with the Conservative Democratic Party to form The Centre in 2021.
