She is best known for her role in the television series Hill Street Blues, for which she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Additionally, she appeared in the disaster film When Time Ran Out.
Prior to her acting career, Hamel worked as a secretary for a company that manufactured ironing board covers. An interesting tidbit about her is that she modeled in the last cigarette commercial to air in the United States back in 1971.
In terms of personal life, Hamel married Michael Irving in 1971; however, the couple divorced ten years later.
