About Vera Karalli
Vera Karalli, born on July 27, 1889 in Russia, was a prominent ballerina and actress of the silent film era. She began her career as a principal dancer with Russia’s Bolshoi Theatre before making the transition to performing in Russian silent movies such as “War and Peace” (1915) and “The Dying Swan” (1917).
Before gaining fame as an actress, Karalli trained at the Moscow Theatre School and performed with the Ballets Russes company in the early years of the twentieth century.
Notably, she was also known for being romantically involved with Russia’s Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich. Karalli has been linked to conspiracy theories surrounding the killing of Grigori Rasputin during the Bolshevik Revolution-era due to her connection with Pavlovich.
Born and raised in Moscow, Russia, Karalli relocated to Lithuania, Romania, France, and Austria following the October Revolution of 1917.
