About Valerie Solanas

Valerie Solanas, born on April 9th, 1936 in New Jersey, was a novelist known for her radical feminist work titled the SCUM Manifesto. She is perhaps best remembered as the would-be assassin of her acquaintance and sometimes artistic collaborator Andy Warhol. Despite shooting Warhol, he was able to recover through emergency surgery.

Prior to gaining notoriety, Solanas graduated from the University of Maryland and pursued graduate psychology courses at both the University of Minnesota and the University of California, Berkeley.

Throughout her life, she experienced periods of homelessness and worked as a prostitute. During her trial for attempted murder, she was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.

Born into a family of Spanish and Italian heritage in New Jersey, Solanas moved to New York City in the 1960s. In the early 1950s, she gave birth to a son who was immediately placed up for adoption by social services.
