Valerie LaVerne Thomas (born February 8, 1943) is an American data scientist and inventor from Baltimore, Maryland. She is known for her groundbreaking work on NASA’s Landsat program and for inventing and patenting the illusion transmitter in 1980.
Prior to her fame, Thomas attended Morgan State University, a historically black college, where she studied physics.
Throughout her career, she has received accolades such as the Goddard Space Flight Center Award of Merit and the NASA Equal Opportunity Medal. In addition to her professional accomplishments, she played an instrumental role in mentoring students through the Mathematical Aerospace Research and Technology Inc. program.
