About Valentina Tereshkova
Valentina Tereshkova, born on March 6, 1937 in Russia, is a celebrated astronaut and the first woman to journey into space. She made history by spending just under three days in orbit. In addition to her pioneering space mission, she also served as one of the Olympic flag carriers in 2014.
Tereshkova’s interest in parachuting began at a young age and she trained in skydiving as part of the local AeroClub before embarking on her remarkable career as an astronaut. Despite facing stiff competition, she was chosen from among 400 candidates to be a part of a USSR expedition aboard Vostok 6.
In terms of her personal life, Tereshkova married fellow astronaut Andrian Nikolayev in 1963 and they had a daughter named Elena before divorcing in 1982. Subsequently, she remarried Yuliy G. Shaposhnikov.
