About Valentina Kozlova
Valentina Kozlova (born August 26, 1957) is a Soviet-born Russian American ballerina and founder of the Valentina Kozlova International Ballet Competition. Known for her lyrical and expressive style, she began her career with the Bolshoi Ballet before becoming a principal dancer at the New York City Ballet from 1983 to 1995.
Kozlova later founded her own ballet school, the Valentina Kozlova Dance Conservatory, in 2003. Her early passion for dance was nurtured by her mother who encouraged her to join a children’s ballet company at age seven. She went on to study at the Bolshoi Ballet School and became a principal dancer with the company in 1975.
In addition to performing on Broadway in On Your Toes in 1982, she received acclaim for her role as Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Kozlova also returned to Moscow for special performances and collaborated with choreographer Margo Sappington on the touring company known as Daring Project,
Kozlova has been influential through teaching as well—many of her private students have gone on to dance for esteemed companies such as Boston Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, and Cuban National Ballet.
She was married to fellow dancer Leonid Kozlov from 1973 until their divorce in 1985. Currently based in New York City, she continues to contribute significantly to the world of ballet through performance and education alike.
