Val Demings, born on March 12, 1957 in Jacksonville, Florida, is an American politician currently serving as a U.S. representative from Florida’s 10th congressional district since 2017. Additionally, she assumed the role of first lady of Orange County, Florida after her husband Jerry Demings was sworn in as mayor in December 2018.
Prior to her career in politics, Demings had attended segregated schools during the 1960s and later graduated from Wolfson High School. She subsequently pursued studies at Florida State University where she earned a degree in criminology in 1979. Following her graduation, she worked as a state social worker in Jacksonville for eighteen months before going on to become the chief of the Orlando Police Department from 2007 to 2011 – making history as its first female chief and concluding her distinguished twenty-seven year tenure with the department.
Born Valdez Venita Butler into a family of seven children living under modest means with their father employed as a janitor and mother working as a maid; Demings’ upbringing has greatly informed her career trajectory towards public service.
