About Typhoid Mary
Typhoid Mary was an Irish-born cook who, despite being asymptomatic herself, managed to infect 49 people with typhoid fever during her culinary career. Born in Cookstown, Northern Ireland on September 23, 1869, she immigrated to the United States at age fourteen.
Before gaining notoriety for spreading the disease, she worked as a cook in New York City during the early 1900s. Despite sickening many others with typhoid fever, she never showed any symptoms of the disease herself and refused to believe that she was carrying it.
After spending nearly three decades in a government-mandated quarantine, Typhoid Mary died in isolation. The events surrounding her case have made her a figure of public interest and curiosity related to health and epidemics.
