About Trey Anthony
Trey Anthony (born February 18, 1983) is a Canadian playwright best known for her work on the play and television series Da Kink in My Hair. She has also written the books How Black Mothers Say I Love You and Black Girl In Love (With Herself). Additionally, she is the founder of Trey Anthony Studios, a television and theater production company.
Anthony’s work has received numerous accolades including being named one of the top-ten plays in Canadian theatrical history and receiving 4 NAACP Theatre Awards.
She was born in London, England to Jamaican parents and moved to Canada with her mother at age 12. Raised primarily by her grandparents, she attended Brampton’s Notre Dame High School before pursuing higher education at York University.
In addition to her accomplishments as a playwright, Anthony is also an award-winning motivational speaker and has been recognized for her contributions to Canadian comedy. Her honors include the Eve Ensler Award of the Arts, NAACP Theatre Award, Gemini Award, Harry Jerome Award, Egale Canada award, as well as induction into the Brampton Arts Walk of Fame.
Outside of her professional life, Anthony’s personal achievements extend to family life; it is noteworthy that during a production of How Black Mothers Say I Love You,” her sister got engaged. More recently in 2019 she adopted her son Kai alongside putting forth efforts towards involvement in community arts initiatives.
