About Toni Brown
Toni Brown (born November 16, 1938 in California) is a pianist famous for her role as a founder of the late 1960s and early 1970s rock-jazz-blues-folk fusion band Joy of Cooking. As the group’s pianist, she contributed to their hit single “Brownsville” and albums such as Joy of Cooking (1971), Closer to the Ground (1971), and Castles (1972). She launched the band, which was one of the first female-fronted rock groups in history, in 1967.
After her music career, Brown released two solo albums: Good for You, Too (1973) and Toni Brown (1979). She then pursued a master’s degree in psychology and established a non-profit youth center called Four Winds West.
Based in Berkeley, California, she collaborated with fellow members Terry Garthwaite, David Garthwaite, Ron Wilson, and Fritz Kasten as part of her Joy of Cooking “family”.
