About Toi Derricotte
Toi Derricotte (born April 12, 1941) is an African-American poet and creative writing professor. She was born in Hamtramck, Michigan. Derricotte has written poetry collections such as Captivity, Tender, and The Undertaker’s Daughter. Her autobiographical poetic work entitled The Black Notebooks: An Interior Journey has also been well received.
Derricotte moved to New York City in 1967 and completed a master’s degree in English literature from New York University. As a child, she was deeply affected by visits to her grandparents’ house which doubled as a funeral parlor.
Her father was from Kentucky while her mother had Louisiana Creole heritage. Derricotte gave birth to an illegitimate child in 1962 while she was a student at Wayne State University.
