About Theodore Guerin
Theodore Guerin was born on October 2, 1798, in France. She was a religious leader and the founder of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, a congregation of Catholic nuns established in 1840.
Before gaining fame for her religious work, she joined a convent when she was 25 years old. In addition to her own contributions, Theodore Guerin is known for leading a group of five other nuns from France to Indiana in 1840 where they founded several schools and missions.
Her father, Laurent Guerin, served as an officer in the French Navy under Napoleon Bonaparte.
