About Thelma Houston
Thelma Houston, born on May 7, 1946 in Leland, Mississippi, is a Grammy-winning pop/disco/dance/R&B recording artist. She has released an astounding 23rd album called A Woman’s Touch in 2013 and is best known for her cover version of the song “Don’t Leave Me This Way” which earned her the Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
Prior to fame, she began her career singing gospel music with the Art Reynolds Singers and signed with Capitol Records in 1967. Her first big hit, “Baby Mine,” propelled her into stardom and shortly after, she accepted an offer from Motown Records.
In 2003, West Hollywood in Los Angeles declared January 29th as Thelma Houston Day due to her humanitarian efforts in the battle against AIDS. In addition to this honor, she performed on popular television shows American Idol and America’s Got Talent in 2009.
Thelma grew up in Long Beach, CA with three sisters before marrying and having two children later on.
