About Tessa McWatt
Tessa McWatt is a Guyanese-Canadian author and educator known for her work as a novelist. She was born on January 1, 1959 in Guyana and later moved to Canada with her family at the age of three. Growing up, she had aspirations of becoming a writer.
McWatt has written several novels including Dragon’s Cry, Vital Signs, Higher Ed, and This Body. In addition to her career as a writer, she has also worked as a creative writing professor at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, United Kingdom.
In 2021, Tessa McWatt was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Notably, she also contributed to Hannah Kendall’s opera The Knife of Dawn by singing libretto based on poet Martin Carter’s incarceration.
Her diverse heritage includes Scottish, English, French, Portuguese, Indian,Amerindian,African,and Chinese origins.She co-edited Luminous Ink: Writers on Writing in Canada in 2018. Her memoir Shame on Me: An Anatomy Race and Belonging won the Non-Fiction category at both the Eccles British Library Award (2018) and the OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature (2020).
