About Tarana Burke
Tarana Burke, born on September 12, 1973 in Harlem, New York, is a social activist known for creating the Me Too campaign through her nonprofit organization Just Be Inc. in 2007. The phrase later gained widespread traction as a hashtag used on social media to show support for victims of sexual violence.
Prior to her activism work, Burke served as the Senior Director for Girls for Gender Equity and had a significant private conversation with a sexual abuse victim while working as a youth camp director in 1996. This conversation inspired her to coin the phrase “Me Too.”
In addition to her advocacy work, she made headlines by being selected to push the Waterford crystal button that initiated the ball drop in Times Square on New Year’s Eve 2018. A photo posted on Twitter featuring Burke and her mother garnered attention in September 2016.
