About Tanaquil LeClercq
Tanaquil LeClercq (October 2, 1929) was a renowned ballet dancer known for her time as a prominent member of the New York City Ballet. Despite being paralyzed from the waist down due to contracting polio in 1965, she continued to contribute to the dance world as a teacher.
She began her journey in ballet after earning a scholarship to attend the School of American Ballet in 1941. Interestingly, before her own diagnosis with polio, she had portrayed a paralyzed victim of the disease at a benefit performance.
Notably, Tanaquil was married to celebrated choreographer George Balanchine from 1952 to 1969.
