About Sylvia Likens
Sylvia Likens was born on January 3, 1949 in Indiana. Sadly, she fell victim to a horrific act of homicide at the hands of her temporary guardian Gertrude Baniszewski and two of Baniszewski’s children, along with two neighborhood boys who also participated in the killing. Tragically, Sylvia suffered from shock, intentional starvation leading to malnutrition, and traumatic brain injury which ultimately led to her death.
Prior to her untimely passing, Sylvia was subjected to torture and starvation by Gertrude Baniszewski on multiple occasions. The mistreatment began when Likens’ father was late on paying for babysitting services rendered by Baniszewski.
A prosecutor during Baniszewski’s murder trial referred to Sylvia’s death as the worst violent crime in Indiana’s history.
She grew up alongside her siblings Diana, Danny, Jenny and Benny in Lebanon, Indiana under Betty Grimes Likens and Lester Cecil Likens. Being raised by carnival workers who traveled frequently led Sylvia and her siblings into the care of neighbors and friends due to their parents’ absence.
