Susannah Mushatt Jones was born on July 6, 1899 in Alabama. She gained recognition as a supercentenarian and in 2013, she became the fourth oldest living person in the world. Prior to her rise to fame, she had dreams of becoming a teacher but was unable to afford tuition at the Tuskegee Institute. Instead, she worked as a nanny and later established The Calhoun Club which provided scholarships for higher education to African-American youth. Jones attributed her remarkable longevity to habits such as getting plenty of sleep each night, abstaining from alcohol and tobacco use, remaining single throughout her life, and refraining from using cosmetics or hair dye. She displayed incredible resilience and determination throughout her life’s journey.
