About Susanna Moodie
Susanna Moodie was an English-born memoirist known for her writings about her experiences as a settler in Canada. She is best remembered for her 1852 memoir Roughing it in the Bush. In addition to memoirs, she authored novels including Mark Hurdlestone, The World Before Them, and Flora Lyndsay. Her works of children’s fiction include The Little Quaker and The Sailor Brother.
Moodie published her debut children’s book, Spartacus, in the early 1820s. In 2003, she was honored with her own commemorative Canadian stamp.
Born Susanna Strickland in Suffolk, England, Moodie married John Moodie in 1831.
