About Susan Sontag
Susan Sontag, born on January 16, 1933 in New York City, was an American author known for her influential works including On Photography, Against Interpretation, The Way We Live Now, and Illness as Metaphor. She received numerous literary honors such as the National Book Critics Circle Award, the MacArthur Fellowship, and the National Book Award.
Before gaining fame as a novelist, Sontag grew up in New York City and studied at both the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Chicago. In 1963 she published her first work of fiction titled The Benefactor.
She was applauded by The New York Review of Books for being one of the most influential critics of her generation. Susan Sontag identified herself as bisexual and had notable relationships with both men and women; she married Philip Rieff at age seventeen after a brief ten-day courtship and also had a significant relationship with photographer Annie Leibovitz.
