About Susan Orlean
Susan Orlean (born October 31, 1955) is an American journalist and author. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio and is best known for her work as a staff writer for The New Yorker and as the author of The Orchid Thief, which served as the basis for the film Adaptation.
Orlean has also contributed to publications such as Esquire and Rolling Stone. She studied history and literature at the University of Michigan before beginning her career at the Willamette Weekly in Oregon. Her first book, Saturday Night, was published in 1990.
In addition to her literary achievements, Orlean’s article about surfing girls inspired the movie Blue Crush. She has received academic honors including a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University, an honorary doctorate from the University of Michigan, and a Guggenheim Fellowship.
Orlean was previously married to Peter Sistrom from 1983-1999 and later married John Gillespie in 2001. Together they have a son and step-son.
