Susan La Flesche Picotte was an American physician and the first Native American female physician in the United States. Born on June 17, 1865 in Nebraska, she earned her medical degree from the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1889.
Picotte is known for founding the first privately-funded hospital on a Native American reservation. She was raised by her parents on the Omaha Reservation.
