Susan L. Taylor (born January 23, 1946) is an American journalist who became Editor-in-Chief of the African-American women’s magazine Essence in 1981.
She began working for Essence in the magazine’s first year of publication. While ascending to the rank of Editor-in-Chief, she managed to earn her bachelor’s degree from Fordham University.
She was the 1998 recipient of The Magazine Publishers of America’s Henry Johnson Fisher Award and was the first African-American woman to receive the honor.
Taylor was born in Harlem, New York City to parents who had immigrated to America from Trinidad and St. Kitts.
