Susan Atkins (1948-05-07) was a criminal who gained notoriety for her involvement as a member of the Manson family and her participation in eight murders during the summer of 1969. During her trial, she and her co-defendants showed little remorse for their acts and frequently disrupted proceedings with bouts of songs.
Atkins was born in San Gabriel, California. She was sentenced to death but later had her punishment commuted to life in prison. She spent almost 40 years behind bars, becoming California’s longest-serving female inmate at the time.
