Sophie Lyons, born on December 22, 1847 in Lauben, Germany, was a notorious thief and con artist who gained notoriety in New York City’s criminal underworld. Wanted in cities across the United States and Canada, she became one of the most infamous female criminals of her time.
Early in life, Lyons demonstrated her criminal tendencies when she was caught stealing at the age of three and arrested for the first time at twelve. She continued down this path and later escaped from Sing Sing prison with fellow criminal Ned Lyons. The couple fled to Canada with their children.
Born into a family with a background in crime, Sophie learned pickpocketing and shoplifting from her mother. She married fellow pickpocket Maury Harris at sixteen before marrying Ned Lyons, an infamous bank robber with whom she had six children.
In her later years, Sophie turned away from a life of crime and devoted herself to helping juvenile delinquents reform.
