About Sophie Blanchard
Sophie Blanchard, born on March 25, 1778 in France, was a French balloonist known for her pioneering role as the first female professional balloonist. She is particularly remembered for being the wife of renowned ballooning figure Jean-Pierre Blanchard. Tragically, in 1819, she became the first woman to perish in an aviation accident.
Before gaining fame as a balloonist, Sophie Blanchard was born in the Trois-Canons commune and married Jean-Pierre Blanchard sometime during the 1790s.
Her remarkable skill as a balloonist captured the attention of significant figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte who bestowed upon her the title of Aeronaut of the Official Festivals.
Despite her achievements in ballooning, Sophie did not have any children and was born to Protestant parents.
